Who is Yolanda Adams? · 1131 days ago by Music Man

One web site biography of Yolanda Adams describes her as an inspiration to many people. This should not come as a surprise because Yolanda has made her mark as the first woman of modern gospel music. Her career spans 15 impressive years of classic and great singing.

Yolanda Adams was raised in Houston, Texas. Her house was bathed in music, and along with six other siblings, has had considerable exposure to all types of music: classical, gospel and Motown, as well as other genres. She sang as a teenager and after she graduated from college, she continued to perform on weekends. She worked as a school teacher at about the same time.

As Adams gained popularity in singing, she decided to give up full-time teaching. She took on the lead singer role in the Southeast Inspirational Choir, and this attracted Thomas Whitfield who worked for the Sound of Gospel Records. It was with Sound of Gospel Records that she recorded her debut album, “Just as I Am” in 1988.

Adams has a strong, resonant voice and is also a beauty. She later recorded for Tribute Records in 1990 and launched a series of top gospel albums which established her on Gospel radio. She won several awards. Adams veered away from gospel music after spending 10 years singing in that genre and signed up with Elektra Records. She released the album “Mountain High…Valley Low” in 1999.

Following the release of Mountain High, Adams released a modern album that became a hit with pop and urban listeners. So after 10 years of gospel music, Adams landed with top 5 R&B and top 40 Pop hits that stayed on the charts for over a year. This earned her a Grammy – her very first – for the prize, “Best Contemporary Soul Gospel.”

Adams released a Christmas album, and then followed “Mountain High” with “Believe”, believed to be a mainstream, less ambitious disc that had moderate success along with “Never Give Up.” “The Experience” was the title of her live album which showcased not only her talent but also her unique ability in performing.

Adams had a child but was divorced after an unhappy marriage.
She works with inner city school children in collaboration with FILA.
